Inspiring the next generation of scientists as well as all fans of science is important. Dr. Laird has given research talks to the public at local museums including the Exploratorium as well as in local elementary and high schools. Trainees in the lab have participated in the Science and Health Education Partnership , the Bay Area Science Festival, and have served as judges for science fairs at one of our closest public elementary schools, Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila.
Solving the most important problems of our time requires partnerships across disciplines; mobilization of technology toward identification, intervention, and prevention; and education of future scientists, clinicians, and the public. As part of the leadership of the NIH-funded UCSF Environmental Research and Translation for Health (EaRTH) Center, Dr. Laird is working to accelerate the discovery and prevention of environmental exposures that affect reproduction and development to improve human health across the lifespan.
Making research results accessible to taxpayers, patients, and learners everywhere benefits science and the community. Dr. Laird worked to cement faculty support and awareness around Open Access publishing as chair of the UCSF Faculty Senate Committee on Library and Scholarly Communications.
